“He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
— Psalm 91:4
September has always been a bittersweet month for me. It’s the month my daddy was born, and also the month we had to say goodbye. Every year, as the mornings start to feel just a little cooler and the days take on that gentle, golden light, I find myself thinking of him more often. And without fail, those thoughts are wrapped up in the smell of coffee.
A Little About Daddy
He loved his family deeply, and he loved our momma with his whole heart. He was a great man — steady, faithful, and full of quiet strength. A man of honor in every way. He worked hard, lived with integrity, and showed us what it meant to live a life you could be proud of. Those lessons are as much a part of my life today as the love of coffee he passed down to me.
And now, as I step into a new season as Pamaw, I can’t help but feel extra grateful for the legacy of love and family Daddy left us. Holding this sweet new grandbaby, I often think about how Daddy would have adored her — and how the love he poured into us will keep flowing through the generations.
From Daddy’s Mug to Mine
I get my love for coffee from my daddy. Growing up, I can’t remember a morning in our house that didn’t start with the rich, comforting smell of coffee drifting through the air. Daddy drank coffee all day, every day — it was just part of who he was. And he had one mug, his favorite, that I can still picture perfectly. I remember being a little girl, taking tiny sips from that mug, feeling so grown up just to share a taste with him.
For years, that mug wasn’t in my kitchen — my brother had kept it safe. Then one Christmas a few years ago, he handed me a wrapped box. Inside was Daddy’s mug. I don’t think I’ve ever cried and smiled so much at the same time. Now it sits in my kitchen, and I enjoy coffee from it with a little cream and a little sugar — just the way Daddy drank his. Every time I hold it, it feels like I’m sharing one more cup with him.
This September, I’m dedicating the blog — and honestly, the whole month — to Daddy and to coffee. His birthday will be here soon, and though I can’t celebrate with him in person, I can honor him the way I know best — with a fresh pot brewing and a seat saved on the porch.
What’s Brewing This Month
Porch Coffee Talks – my favorite way to start the day, sharing a cup on the porch. Sometimes it’s just me, my coffee, and the Lord. Lately, I’ve been working through a devotion book a dear friend gifted me, and it’s been such a blessing.
And what’s been on my heart lately? The thought of starting an online women’s Bible study — a cozy, come-as-you-are space where we can gather with our mugs, open the Word together, and encourage one another no matter where we live. It’s just a seed of an idea right now, but it’s one I keep praying over.
My New Ninja Coffee Maker – it’s quickly becoming my go-to for espresso, cold foam, and everything in between. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite coffee recipes — like a salted caramel cold foam and my go-to afternoon affogato — along with little stories about Daddy, porch moments, and the simple joy of slowing down for a cup.
Vintage Percolator Love – one of my most treasured coffee pieces is a vintage percolator gifted by friends who know my love for coffee and thrifted finds. It’s more than just a pretty piece to me — it’s a connection to simpler times, a reminder of friendship, and a perfect way to brew a cup when I want that old-fashioned taste.
Garden Notes
And of course, life on the farm is never far from my heart. Right now, the garden is mostly weeds since we ended the spring season when the Florida heat got unbearable. But fall is on its way, and that means it’s time to start prepping the beds for all our winter favorites. I’ll share more about the fall garden in next month’s note — hopefully with fewer weeds and more promise of fresh harvests.
Pull Up a Chair
Before I close, I’d love to hear from you. As I plan future porch notes, what would you enjoy hearing more about? Faith, family, farm life, recipes, sewing, the garden — or maybe just the simple everyday moments? Pull up a chair, pour your coffee, and let me know.
So, come sit on the porch with me this September. Bring your favorite mug, and I’ll fill it up. We’ll sip, swap stories, and remember that some of life’s best moments happen over coffee.
And I can’t help but smile when I think about Daddy now — celebrating with Jesus, coffee in his hand. I mean, surely there’s coffee in the streets of gold.
With grace,
Pam
